Come ring in The Year of the Monkey with us, Japanese style in Downtown Brooklyn!

The sound of taiko drums and traditional New Year’s dances will shake your body+soul awake and the mouth-watering selection of Japanese food by Café Zaiya will nourish you inside out! Family crafts, traditional calligraphy and New Year’s games will be available for all. The Roulette bar will be open for those 21+ looking to add a little buzz to their afternoon.

Entertainment includes Kaoru Watanabe Taiko Center, Giant Calligraphy performance by Taisan Tanaka, Japanese Traditional Dance, Kendama Battle, etc.

One adult or kids entry ticket gets you all the shows, mochi-pounding, arts+crafts & games. Come celebrate with us!

Mochi Pounding

mochitsuki
Try your hand at mochi-tsuki, a New Year tradition that has been around for over 800 years. Pound freshly steamed mochi rice with our gigantic wooden mallet and traditional stone mortar and watch the rice turn into sweet mochi cake. * smash! smash! *

Traditional Japanese Dance Performance

Japanese Traditional Dance
A beautiful Japanese dance called “nihon buyo” will be performed by a Nihon Buyo dancer. Nihon buyo is a traditional Japanese performing art. It’s a mixture of dance and pantomime while wearing kimonos and using items like Japanese fans, ropes and other items. Delightful!

Japanese Taiko Drum Performance

Kaoru Watanabe Taiko Center“, a Japanese taiko drumming studio in Brooklyn, New York, will drum up excitement and energy to lift our spirits to welcome the New Year. Boom!

Giant Calligraphy Performance

A big brush calligraphy performance by Taisan TANAKA, NYC based Japanese calligrapher. Traditionally, calligraphy is written in a quiet room while calming the mind. However recently, calligraphy performances are gaining popularity to observe this fascinating art.

Kendama Battle by KeNYC

A kendama is a Japanese toy that requires careful skill and quick reflexes. It’s popularity has exploded around the world. See the kendama skillfully honed and enjoy the amazing battle style Kendama Performance! by KeNYC.

FAMILY ARTS+CRAFTS

There will be plenty of activities for everyone, including traditional New Years games, Japanese calligraphy, making EMAs (traditional wishing plaques), Daruma doll, and omikuji (Buddhist fortune telling). Happy New Years!
